Day 14 - 43.5km in 7.5 hours
447 km walked
342.1 km to go
Ok so last night I found it very hard to sleep as my legs were in a whole lot of pain and every time I moved I got aches.
I was awake from about 4:30am but unfortunately unbeknown to me we were locked in to the hostel and could not leave early! I managed to sneak out by 6:20am!
I made a big mistake with breakfast today eating a pork Pâté and half a loaf of bread - this would repeat on me all morning and make the first two hours hell!
I wasn't feeling so great today, partly because of breakfast, partly because of all my blisters and partly from lack of sleep!
I struggled on to a major city called Sahagun - there were many things to see hear but I raced through the city barely stopping - only to treat myself to a huge bar of membrillo (quince fruit jelly)!
So now the Camino has turned into somewhat of a race for me, one minute I am smelling the roses and now I am at it getting the kms down! I do however have a good second breakfast stop and lunch break each of about 30 mins where I stop eat enjoy the scenery and rest the feet!
At all stops today I decided to heed advise and remove socks (which to no suprise were drenched). I think I will continue doing this as today no new blisters! One thing though with taking boots off and changing socks - the next km is hell on your blistered feet!
Today was a lot of open flat slightly undulating tracks, quiet boring and I reverted back to daydreaming weather I would walk to Portugal and about my upcoming trip to Thailand! I also pondered the thought of maybe doing another Pueblo Ingles Program of time permits after I arrive in Santiago!
So tonight I am in a place called Reliegos a small sleepy town just shy (24km) of Leon. Somewhat of a ghost town with 100s of buildings and absolutely no people! There is not even a mini-market! I managed to get some bread off the Manager of my Albergue and a few other small supplies off of another Albergue! It's amazing how hard it is to find supplies in these small towns - you would think with population over 100 the locals would also need somewhere to buy fruit, veg and other bits and pieces.
I put in the extra kms today so that I could arrive in the large city of Leon by midday tommorow and pick up some supplies.
The last 5km today felt like 10km and to go with the knee pain I have now on the other leg shin pain (scary as I know how debilitating shin splints can be).
Either way tommorow should be a much shorter day and easier on the body.
Now that I am over half way I feel my momentum increasing like I am on the home straight! I know it isn't a race but I do like the challenge of pushing extra kms each day - the first 25km are a walk in the park the next 10km are a challenge and anything after that is pushing the limit - and that limit is what drives me. At the moment pushing myself and my body is more fulfilling then sightseeing churches and monuments but there is definitely a time and place for that!
Oh and the absolute best thing about walking fast and so many kms a day I can justify to myself anything at all I want to eat and I can eat twice as much :)
