European Adventure 2017
It was a dull day today as we headed off up the road. First stop was to Threave Castle which was constructed in the 14th century and was one of the many strongholds for the 'Black' Douglas clan. Now a days the island is a wildlife reserve and you can still get across to the ruin which is surrounded by water, by ringing a bell on the jetty to summon a ferryman. We opted to look at the castle from this side of the river and to visit the lookout for the Osprey (a huge bird of prey with a 5ft wingspan) which was a few hundred metres along the bank. At first we were told that the baby birds had fledged and therefore the birds were not really around much anymore, however after about 15 minutes one of the birds arrived back and sat on a branch close to the nest. We saw it through the telescope and it was pretty special. On the way back to the carpark we were picking and eating the wild raspberries along the track when we noticed three young Roe deer close by. They saw us but didn't seem to be too bothered so long as we stayed where we were. The rest of the day was spent driving through the west side of Scotland heading up to try find an uncongested route through Glasgow (where the games are at present) if one exists. Who says the Scots have short arms and long pockets? So far we haven't had to pay for parking and the towns seem to make life easy for visitors in the hope they will spend money. Apparently here is Scotland they are more lenient about where you can park up for the night and so we are trying that out right now by camping in a picnic spot down beside the sea. The scenery is just great and so far we are loving Scotland

Colleen Loving your commentary and photos Jo. Sounds like a wonderful time. A friend mentioned the Falkirk Wheel is worth a visit if you are in central Scotland.
