European Adventure 2017
Yet another stinking hot day today. Today is Tuesday and there is not a cloud in the sky or a breath of wind. Yesterday was similar and it was also the opening day of the Royal Welsh A&P Show in Builth Wells which was on our way north from Jane and David's so we thought we would go. Lidka and Leicester who were further up the country decided they would go too. The organisation of the traffic in and out of the show was excellent with huge fields used as car parks three kilometres from the site which were serviced with a fleet of double decker buses with free rides to the show. Obviously costs covered by the entry fee of £25 each. This show is the largest in the UK and attracts over 270,000 visitors over the three days. The show is very similar to our A&P show with machinery, livestock, horses, farm animals, food and rides for the kids. It was HUGE. And the weather was just like our typical show days with sizzling temperatures and very little breeze. We wandered the extensive machinery section for ages and then found the wood chopping section which had an event we had never seen before, that of pole climbing. It was fascinating and so we watched that for a while. The best young chaps got 30metres up the pole to ring the bell in 13 seconds! We were having afternoon tea at a table and I got chatting to some local ladies with 'stewardess' on their labels. When they knew we were from NZ they insisted we went to the International Pavilion to register our attendance so that their statistics would capture us. So we duly did and were rewarded with special passes which gave us free entry into grandstands, free food and drinks at the Pavillion and the use of all their facilities. So we felt very privileged to have a badge saving 'International Visitor' as we walked around! There were so many interesting things to see and we wandered around the stands for hours. Bought an icecream from a stall with 14 girls all busy filling orders, found a vegetable display with beautifully presented specimens and magnificent floral displays to mention just a few. A great day. From there we headed north half an hour to a lovely camping spot beside the Wye river and had a very pleasant evening there. The Wilson's met us there also at the end of their day at the show and today we head further north and hopefully by tonight the Sensational Six will all be together again.
