European Adventure 2017
Yet another sunny day....who said it always rains in England! Perhaps I had better keep quiet or it might change! We left our wheat field near Chichester and headed off towards the New Forest which is not new at all as it was created as a royal forest by William l in about 1079 for the royal hunt, mainly of deer. It was created at the expense of more than 20 small hamlets and isolated farmsteads hence it was a 'new' compact area in his time. It now includes one of the largest remaining tracts of unenclosed pastureland, heathland and forest in south East England. Horse and cattle roam over the hills, roads and in the villages which is really strange to see. What a lovely area though, you could spend a lot of time there investigating the little villages dotted around and wandering through the forest tracks and beside the lakes and streams. And we would have if we could have found parking for the vans. Well around the villages that is, as there are certainly places to park out away from the villages. Anyway it was a lovely area. Lunch was at Lymington in the New Forest down on the Coast, this is where Ben Ainslie the Americas Cup skipper calls home. A lovely little village. From there we headed through building traffic to the Jurassic Coast and to Durdle Door in particular. Don't you just love the English names!! What a little gem this place is. Firstly is the little village of Lulworth which was so quaint but we couldn't stop as the streets were too narrow and once again there is nowhere to park a campervan but I'm sure we will go back there tomorrow. Then we drove up through the caravan park where we are staying tonight to get to a large parking area from where you can out onto the cliffs and look down into the beautiful tourquoise blue water. Mandy and Charlie had got there before us and were down on the beach in their togs having been for a swim. They said the water was VERY cold. The shapes of the rocks and cliffs are fantastic and tell the history of the planet. We will do some more exploring tomorrow. In the meantime some effort went into getting the vehicle level enough to sleep. Although still not ideal we found some blocks and got it as close as we could!
