European Adventure 2017
At first the weather looked quite promising this morning but as we got underway towards the Isle of Skye, it closed in and started raining quite hard. That was a shame as you could tell that in the sunshine it would have been so pretty. It was still pretty but we couldn't see the tops of the mountains and the mist was down low. I would hate to be a Dulux or Resine salesperson up this way. It seems that the colour of choice is white. All the villages around the highland area anyway appear to be of beautiful little whitewashed houses with grey slate roofs. Very pretty as they are nestled into the green of the hillsides between the water of the lochs or the sea. The heather is just beginning to flower up here and although it is not yet up on the hills it is starting to make a show beside the road which is lovely to see. It was still raining as we arrived in the main town on the Isle, Portree. After parking in the FREE parking place for Motorhomes and coaches - (yay for Scotland!) we donned our wet weather gear and brolly and headed up the street. We could see that on a nice day a visit to the wharf would have been lovely and the view fantastic, however as it was bucketing down we opted to head back to the van and continue the drive. In fact since it was such a miserable day what better to do than visit a distillery! Talisker is the only distillery on the Isle. It is quite a large concern and was rather busy when we were there. It was established in 1830 in Loch Harport beside the sea. The boys enjoyed a tasting and Charlie bought some and then just as the rain eased we headed back out and then off the Isle back to the mainland. We set a course for a spot north on the Wester Ross Coastal Trail with an idea of finding a place on the side of the road somewhere for the night. The road became very narrow as we went on the west coastal road. There were plenty of passing bays along the way and there were plenty of stops and starts as we had to pull over to let vehicles get through. It was a fantastic drive and just as we found a spot the rain stopped and the cloud lifted. So here we are parked up on a hill overlooking upper Loch Torridon which is actually sea water. It is just lovely......except for the midges!!!!!!!!!
