European Adventure 2017
Today we visited the Big Smoke and big it was! It has been about seven years since we last visited London and it was nice to visit again. This time we did notice some differences though. Although it was a Saturday we could not believe the lack of cars on the road. We suspect this can be attributed to requiring special permits for central London and the costs related to the size of vehicle you drive. The regulations appear to have fixed the major problem of vehicles on the road but it seems to have created another problem on the footpath! The footpaths are wall to wall people as you will note in one of the photos. We stayed in Newbury over night which meant two trains to get to London and then of course the Underground. It was such a nice day we didn't use the Underground a lot as we walked nearly everywhere. One of the things we thought would be nice to do was to go up on the London Eye, however the queue was horrendous and they were totally booked for the day and only taking bookings tomorrow and that was at lunchtime today. It would have cost us $NZ80 to do one circuit on the big wheel. What a money maker this machine is with 1000's of people a day taking the trip. Shame we couldn't get up in it all the same. We also visited Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Tower of London and Tower Bridge. The Tower of London had been decorated with Poppies in remembrance of the blood shed on land and sea during the. First World War. The millions of poppies created a spectacular memorial for those lost and was very moving. London was heaving with people and it was quite fun to be part of it for a short time and great to be zapping here and there on the underground. However it is also nice to be back out of it again and tucked up in our little van in quiet Newbury.

mum The Thames Barrier is a must see. We saw it as part of a trip on the Thames which was a vedy good way to view it. A. Remarkable feat of engineering.
