European Adventure 2017
After coffee and a top up of the groceries in the local village of Rhaydah we headed off towards the Devil's Bridge. As legend has it the Devil dressed as a nice looking man came up to an old woman who was upset that there was no bridge over the river. He promised her that he would build a bridge for her as long as promised to give him the first living thing to cross the new bridge. She agreed and thought it wouldn't be all that bad to belong to this man but she didn't think he would really build a bridge. She was very surprised to find a bridge there the next day and the man reappeared asking for his reward. The woman walked towards the bridge but just before she crossed it she threw something across it and her old scruffy dog shot across in front of her. The Devil was furious that he had been tricked and disappeared in disgust and left her alone. Anyway, there are now three bridges at the site all on top of each other. The first one is the original and then as replacement bridges have been built they have been built on top of the previous one. It is a lovely spot with waterfalls and huge caverns which the rushing water has created over years of exposure. From there we headed towards the coast and had a quick look at Aberystwyth before heading up to Portmeirion which is a fascinating little place. It is a private village built by architect Clough Williams-Ellis over 50 years from 1925 when he purchased the land. All the cottages there are Grade ll listed buildings. They are used as holiday cottages and hotel suites. Portmeirion is now owned by a registered charity and the family are still involved. Those of us who can remember back to the 1960's may remember the TV series "The Prisoner" which was filmed here. Souvenirs from the series are sold from a cottage the lead character used in the series. It has also been the set for another couple of movies but unfortunately I can't remember what they were! One was something to do with chess. The village is an amazing collection of variously styled houses and artefacts often brilliantly coloured which is quirky, out of character, but somehow attractive. Well interesting anyway! It is like walking onto a strange film set. The pictures hopefully will speak for themselves! There was a bit of excitement later in the afternoon as we noticed two people were getting stranded by the tide as it raced in at the rate of knots. Very soon the Coast guard was called but they all disappeared from our sight before we could see what happened. We didn't hear of anyone drowning so assume it all worked out well. We moved on from there to the Caravan Club at Coed-y-Llwyn and met up with Charlie and Mandy for the first time in days and it was so much fun as we all got together at happy hour and recounted our travels over the past days. Happy hour was somewhat extended as there was so much to talk about and photos to look at. A really good night.
