European Adventure 2017
Yesterday we left the Hobnail Inn near Tewksbury in
Gloucestershire where we had a great night at the pub talking to the locals and
headed west into Wales. Our first
destination was ‘Gliffaes’ a country hotel and lodge which is owned by a
distant relative. It is a magnificent
place with beautiful gardens. We made ourselves known at reception and were
greeted by James the owner (his wife is the relative but she didn’t come out)
but he wasn’t particularly interested in us so after a very expensive afternoon
tea we moved on to find somewhere to spend the night. We noted that James drives a Maserati so that
may explain our $52 afternoon tea!!
We find a lovely sounding spot in the Brit Stop book called the
Cothi Bridge Pub and it lived up to its billing. Overlooking a lovely river which apparently has
trout in we parked up behind the pub with a view of the water. Once again the
locals were great and so welcoming and whilst the accommodation may be free in
these places we are not so sure we are saving any money but we are certainly
having fun!
On from there today up the centre and out to the coast of
Wales to a place called Aberaeron where we stopped for several hours taking in
the sea views and walking through the village.
We even found a butcher who had spent 3 years in NZ working in
Balclutha, Temuka and Invercargill. He
was pleased to speak to some Kiwis as he said he would be back there in a
heartbeat if he could.
From there we headed further north up the coastline which is
stunningly beautiful. Closer to the sea
where the land slopes down from the hills the farms are covered like crazy
paving with little rock walls as are the sides of the roads for the majority of
the way. We had a very close call with a
bus as we entered a small village and it took some inch by inch maneuvering to
get by. Wing mirrors still intact
though!
As we arrived in Harlech where we are spending the night,
the Halech castle suddenly appeared before us as we rounded a bend and it
looked amazing. Our camp site is between
the castle and the beach and apparently the castle is lit up at night so we are
looking forward to that. The facilities
are staggering. Piped music, central
heating and you would swear you were in a 4 star hotel!
Tomorrow we start heading inland and back to England where
we will visit the dealer we purchased the van from and pick up a second gas
bottle as we have learnt they have a different system in France and we will
need to buy adaptors if we run out of gas.

Shirley We stayed in that camp in Harlech too - isn't it amazing. We almost didn't stay when we saw the statics out front !. Walked up to the castle & wandered around the little village up there - lovely with great views. We also went to Port Merrion & that's worth going to - unique!. John said if you are still having battery trouble , it might be worth checking the fan belt that drives the alternator to make sure it's tight. S
