European Adventure 2017
Edinburgh is turning it on including the weather at the moment! Another fine sunny day and so after catching up with the washing we caught the bus into the city and got in amongst the huge crowds enjoying the Fringe Festival. Street theatre was everywhere with big crowds for some and just a few for others. On one side of the Royal Mile were a group of artists doing drawings and caricatures of people and some of them were really good. There were a lot of the usual unicycle riders, some juggling fire sticks or knives. People passing fliers out advertising the hundreds of shows on throughout the day and night. A really buzzy place to be and a really good vibe. Ryan and I had a good look around Edinburgh Castle as Geoff had had enough of them by then! He found himself a little bar to sit in after first having a wander around the shops. The much anticipated event for us though was the Military Tattoo and it certainly didn't disappoint. The streets leading up to the castle were all closed off from about 6pm and the police and security personnel were everywhere. The gates opened at 8.15 for the 9pm show and we joined the moving snake of a cloud as it wound its way around the barriers up towards the castle entrance. We had fantastic seats right up the top facing the castle. And Ryan who had booked months later managed to secure a seat just 10 along from us. We finally managed to catchup with Lidka and Leicester at the show as they had been visiting friends and traveling in a different direction since we left them in Dumfries. It was good to see them again. The show was magnificent, the precision of the performances both individually and the evening as a whole was outstanding. The colours played against the castle were fabulous and there was such a great feeling in the stadium. The sky remained clear so there was no rain and no wind either where we were. New Zealand was represented by a Kapa Haka group and a group of Kiwi Highland dancers - both looked good and went down really well with the crowd. A fantastic nights entertainment and a definite 'would do again'. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did Andrene. The fireworks at the end were loud and beautiful, a great ending to a great night.
