Day 6. In Estella (Star) founded in 1090
Rest day to tour the town and rest the tootsies. We are sitting at the outside tables of one of the many bars/restaurants around the main square with the church on the other side, a cold Sangria in hand. Another warm day and going to be hot for the rest of the week.
Really neat to see the families come to the square in the late afternoon. Reminds me of the axiom that "it takes a village to raise a child". The children run free while the parents visit; almost a nonchalance about where the kids are that you would never see in fearful north American culture.
We were just told the restaurant doesn't offer food until 9 pm so the square will be alive until 11 pm +.
I am turning the 'pen' over to Lynn.
This is a country filled with churches; no matter how small the village, it is dominated by a cathedral. And yet the latest stats show that only 20% of the population attend church. The lavish gold and silver statues would, undoubtedly, pay off the national debt! But we are in awe of the artisans who created the beautiful frescos and stained glass windows & intricate carvings, and thankful they have been preserved for us to marvel at today. I do love this culture, especially the vibrant city plazas where everyone comes together. It's a shame we have not copied this in north america. We are disconnected from our neighbors in a way that this country could not fathom.
There is beautiful music wafting across the plaza from a lone cellist. A cognac is in hand and life is good!
Goodnight & buen Camino to all.
XO
