We stayed in a wonderful Casa Rurale last night - 300 year old house converted to a small hotel. Well kept and should last another 300 anos.
Very short walk today, 3 hours for 13 km in the misty rain to stay in the small village of Villafranca Montes de Oca in order to avoid a monastic albergue 10 km up the road described as 'lacking services & spartan in its maintenance'. It also gives us a 20 km walk tomorrow to the very historic site of Atapuerca, leaving lots of time to tour.
Ended up in this great hotel - San Anton Abad - originally built as a pilgrim hospital in 1377. The stone walls are 5 feet thick; if only they could talk! Many historical artifacts displayed throughout. Good hearty lunch in a nice dining hall where a large table for about 40 was set. The group came in about 3:30 and were there still at 7:30. Family meals are important here.
The cover picture is an even older monastery in use from the 6th to the 9th centuries and abandoned thereafter.
A note from mi esposa:
It appears the language police have invaded our blog site. I note that in my fowl tale from Santa Domingo the other day, every time I typed the word Cock, it was published as c and then ***. I guess the old word for a male bird is now considered naughty even though Webster's first description of the word is:
n. 1. The male of birds, particularly of gallinaceous or domestic fowls.
I shall tell no more tales about c***s & hens.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING CANADA!
From two old birds.
PS: Thanks to our whiz bang computer guru, Brian, we can now view your notes to us on our blog site. Love hearing from you!
