Day 29. To Molinaseca
Rained quite hard all through the night so departed a bit later hoping for a break. Strong winds in our face most of the day, usually with rain stinging our cheeks. Tough climb to the highest point on the route, 1505 meters or about 5000 ft. We had true mountain weather; changed a dozen times during the long day. Lynn loved it way more than the warmer sunny walks. Other peregrinos wondered about my rain poncho and shorts!
Beautiful country; all the leaves are red & gold and we are crunching through them-I feel Halloween approaching! Over to Lynn....
I realize there is a recession on right now and animal rights is likely the farthest thing from the minds of a nation suffering through 20% unemployment, but hopefully one day this country will value and have sympathy for its animals. An SPCA to rescue all the stray dogs and kitties and neuter them is badly needed. Really sad to see so many skinny and unloved animals. A tiny black kitten this morning at our first coffee stop, alone and crying; it breaks your heart. There is the constant barking of dogs in every village - most kept as guard dogs, often chained up. Where is PETA & Pamela Anderson when we need them?!! (Where is Pamela Anderson at any time??....this is Rich interjecting!)
We are asked in every hotel if we want two beds or a 'matrimonial' bed. This is a conundrum because the two separate beds are narrow singles, our feet hanging off the end; the matrimonial bed is a double - again, our feet dangling off the end and no room to toss & turn. Really tough if the bed has a footboard. To most North American couples, used to queen or king beds, neither option is very good but the larger beds will simply not fit up the stairs of these great old inns. The other thing is the pillows. There is only one and it stretches the width of the bed, no matter if a single or double; no small separate pillows to be found ; not easy to sleep trying to share one pillow. Thus the single bed usually wins the day; good zzzzz's are as important on the camino as good shoes! We will be very happy to get home to our King bed. I wonder if we can fit two into the bedroom....
And so to bed. Goodnight to all.
