Day 3. To Pamplona
On the Camino at 7 am under a starry sky and having to use a light to see the trail for the first while. Exceptionally warm for the next week at least, low to mid 80's (28C) so early starts to beat the heat.
Short day of 16km so we could see this wonderful city and it's cathedral built starting in the late 1200's. The bridge in the cover is from the 1400's. Also we both have new shoes now; the blisters from the poor sock decision are worse and I walked over half the last 2 days in sandals with a 20 pound pack so no problem with lighter shoes.
We are going to shorten our daily distance to about 20 km so we have energy to visit the great sights. So maybe 38 walking days instead of 33 if we stick to the guide. Felt like a race to keep up to the keeners.
We can really see old Spanish lifestyles with many buildings several hundred years old, shops closing for afternoon siesta, and people so friendly. They can't do enough and won't accept tips in many cases when they make calls on their cell for us. Like to book the luggage service for Lynn's pack and to book the next night's hotel. She is still up to her tricks. I will get her into an albergue with 40 bunkbeds one day soon.
The city came alive at around 7 as the families come out with the heat and humidity gone.
Lynn's thoughts:
We are sitting at a cafe outside the hotel Iruna where Hemingway stayed and wrote The Sun Also Rises. We look out to a plaza surrounded by gorgeous old buildings & narrow cobblestone streets. Rich has a beer, me a Sangria; we'll order a lite dins, a bottle of Rioja and sit and watch the world go by. Sore feet & aching knees are forgotten.
