Day 35. To Portomarin
Today is the end of five weeks on the Camino and our legs and feet felt it more than earlier days. The fine wine last night might have contributed to the pain. Wonderful scenery and weather again. Four days to walk and we are both glad of the end.
Although there are many more walkers today, we are at the end of the walking season. Lynn has been sending her bag ahead daily using Jacobtrans for 7 Euros per day. Jacobtrans is done for the season so this morning we lugged her mochila (backpack) to a cafe which sent several bags to a cafe here for 3 Euros. What a bargain and thought we were set. Now even that service is done and we now pay 25 Euros daily to send it by taxi. I wonder if the other sister is stronger.......
A few random thoughts which I am sure will sound like the odd musings of an old guy.
When we were crossing the Meseta (was that really 2 weeks ago?) we saw lots of news coverage of forest fires in Galicia. Now for the past 4 days we have been seeing several fire sites daily immediately on the Camino. It is clear from the terrain the fires originated at the Camino, not from nearby roads. Cigarettes tossed likely. Would be in keeping with the extensive litter and graffiti we see all the time. Very hard to fathom. I had thoughts of cleaning a bit of the Camino. Several practical problems. That would involve wearing gloves all the time. It would involve bending down with a backpack on and legs which don't want to bend. And having a place to leave the garbage. So at least we didn't litter.
Almost every little town has streets which are made of small rounded rocks
cemented in place. Great looking but horrible for sore feet to walk on.
The picture is of some of the path in a very remote area. Center track is granite blocks laid on end. Huge cost and effort and no apparent reason why. Also in very remote places we see manhole covers. So a water system underground probably for irrigation, miles from anywhere
