Day 18. To Fromista
The picture is a memorial marker for a peregrino who died on the Camino. We have seen 5 or 6 of these markers and are not half way yet. Most were in isolated spots where help would be hours away. So I guess this can be bad for your health as well as good. Lynn promises to put up a marker for me if needed.
Last night was fiesta night in Castrojeriz so I put the earplugs in and had a great sleep until some-one rudely yanked out an earplug at 6:30 and said "we're late". Wanted an early start as it was a long day, 26 km, and it remains hot, near 30 C. Every day the forecast predicts cooler weather in 3 days and it doesn't happen.
At least the clothes dry quickly. We have only one change each and the Camino is so dusty we need to wash every day. The heat keeps us from having to find the lavendaria.
We have been so surprised at the hundreds of windmills in Spain. Since we left the Pyrenees we have been in sight of them constantly. So the accountant in me had to find out that Spain is the 4th largest wind power country (after China, US, and Germany), supplies 18 pc of demand and up to over 50 pc on windy days. They are trying to wean off of nuclear and coal. Saw only one solar panel so far although this is a very sunny place. Enough of that.
Spain also has an unlimited supply of flies. And are they ever fast. I have only gotten 2 so far. Searching for a swatter but no luck yet. They swarm us in bars, restaurants and on the trail after about 11 am, and particularly find my nose a nice place to land Don't seem to bother the locals or there would be fewer of them. Right now I see 5 landed on our table and others on us.
We are sitting in an oasis of shade in a pretty walled in yard, part of a little bar/cheese shop; nice Spanish music playing and a glass tinkling with ice cubes & a little Martini & Rossi - very refreshing. Fromista is derived from the Latin word for cereal - frumentum - this area having provided copious supplies of wheat to the Roman empire.
And now for a little dinner (hopefully white bean soup on the menu), a little walk about and to bed for an early start tomorrow.
