Day 14. To Atapuerca
Day 15. To Burgos
We are now in Burgos, the home of the Basque terrorism of the 80's and 90's. We cover 2 days as we had no connection yesterday.
Nice walk to Atapuerca which is the site of the first humanoid remains found in Europe, nearly million years old. Were really looking forward to visiting all the sites and the main museum was thoughtfully only 1 km off the path on the right, although the dig site itself was 3 km off to the left. Museum was huge and I mistook it for an aircraft hanger in the distance. It held a single jawbone and lots of posed pictures of the diggers. Came with a tour of a reconstruction next door which we soon found was not available in English or French or German or Swahili. Couldn't go to the site on our own and the tour was 5 hours later and again no Swahili. This is a Unesco site and not a single brochure or book available in any other language but Spanish; Caramba!! Repaired to the local bar to lick our wounds and await the opening of our Casa Rurale in warmth.
Today into Burgos and visited the great cathedral with the tomb of El Cid. Wish I had moustache and could look like Omar. City looks great for walking and has some wonderful architecture & nice sidewalk cafes.
Picked up the care package from Brian of 'no blister' socks and we carry on to the Meseta tomorrow. Nine days of treeless plains. Weather in the mid-20's and sun for the next week at least.
Perhaps the rain in Spain will not fall on the plain!
Left big toe is almost white and the nail is still there but not well attached. Will come off for sure as only attached on one side, not the base. Other big toe is plum purple so that nail may follow. TMI again?
Lynn here: enough already about the toes! I love this city and the picture can't even begin to capture the grand confection that is the cathedral. I could pause here a few days but since I am hanging onto the handle of Richie's Bucket List, must move when he moves. Really loving every minute....ok, maybe not EVERY minute....but most minutes of this incredible journey.
