European Adventure 2017
Another nice day and we headed off in the direction of Rye. Rye is an old walled town which has been largely maintained at it was in Medieval times. Some years ago now a Heritage Order was placed on the entire town and so nothing can now be changed from its current state. About 40 years ago a husband and wife team set about on a Labour of love and made a model of the town of Rye. They used the earliest remaining public records to create the model as accurately as they could and what we saw today was what the town looked like in about 1740. This amazing feat took the couple four years and the town bought it from them to display it. It is simply amazing with all the detail. Wandering around the town with its prominent cobblestones sticking up was a bit uncomfortable at times with thin soles but lovely to see they have retained it as it was. One of the famous people to have lived in Rye was Sir Paul McArtney and his wife Linda and their children. The children all went to the local public school here. Another famous person, Spike Milligan lived in the next town a few minutes away and is buried there. He had asked that when he died a headstone was to be put there inscribed with the words "I told you I was ill" but he was told he couldn't have that as that wasn't 'proper'. So Spike got it inscribed in Gaelic and no one knew what it said for quite some time and by then it was too late! The others all went to 'Battle' which is the area where the Battle of Hastings took place in 1066. After seeing the tapestry at Bayeux in France we were keen to see it from the English perspective but we had some issues with the motorhome that needed sorting so we disappeared up to the closest agent and met up with them all later. The Brit Stop chosen for the night was the Tavern in Telscombe Cliffs a few miles east of Brighton. It didn't look much at the start but did have some stunning views of the coastline a few steps away.
