Lessons About NZ, Snow in California and a Pohutukawa Mystery
Tonight we taught the I-Housers about the beautiful country we call home. The pic you see is me talking about the cultural and ethnic diversity of Aotearoa.
At I-House you can host a homelog about your country so the two other Kiwi I-Housers and I decided we'd do so, teaching people a little about our lingo and our culture along the way. History, geography, sports, film and music, and more were covered by the boys. I taught 'em some Maori, some kiwi slang (so they know what "sweet as" really means!) and about good ol' Kiwi kai, amongst other cultural stuff.
We even managed to get hold of Tim Tams and had one lovely volunteer demonstrate a Tim Tam slam, then finished off the night with some hand-made hokey pokey icecream (takes a lot of work!) and Anzac biscuits the guys had made.
Talking about my country really makes me realise how proud I am to be Kiwi.
And, on a completely different note, today we had SNOW!! Yes, that's right, the cold fluffy white stuff which is usually unheard of in San Diego (in case you fellow hot-climate people - Africa, I'm looking at you!) had forgotten what it's like. Though this was more like little chunks of ice, I guess it's the closest UCSD ever gets to the real stuff. See the latest photo album for pics.
And on one final note, I am confused. Out my window, and on campus, I have noticed these trees which look suspiciously like pohutukawa trees, but I thought those were native to NZ? Could it be a distant cuz?
Not being a botanist myself, I haven't managed to work this mystery out yet but I've put a pic in the photo album too to see if anyone else thinks so. If you can identify it you get a prize. Maybe.
** Pics are up in the "San Diego 8" photo album - if you watch it as a slide-show you can read the little commentaries as well as the captions that go with the photos. Kind-of a cool feature I thought. **
