Grunion Running
Here's a quiz for all you non-Californians:
The term "grunion run" refers to:
a.) when your granny's nose doesn't stop running
b.) running through town in underwear you should have thrown out long ago
c.) scouting the beach for weird fishy things that have come ashore to lay their eggs
d.) a type of disease which sets in after studying for finals too much
Think you know the answer?
Well, if you picked b.)... What were you thinking?!
It's c.), of course, as any San Diegian could tell you. Or maybe not. It's more of a well-kept secret it seems.
Grunion running refers to going to the beach at night, at certain times of the year, to find the flocks of fish [flocks?!] just above the waters edge which have come there to spawn. There are tons of them; the females dig holes to lay the eggs so that they're half in, half sticking out of the sand, waiting for the male grunions to come along and fertilise the eggs.
It's quite a sight! Or so I'm told. I wouldn't really know - our midnight trip to a nearby beach turned out to be fruitless. Though we did see lots of rocks and seaweed which could have been grunions!
In other exciting news - even more exciting than not managing to watch fish spawn! - I'm going to a certain country for a few days in May to see a certain little sister, thanks to a sweet flight deal from STA. Watch this space!
And in other exciting-but-not-quite-so-exciting news: I finish finals tomorrow. Hallelujah.
Just one more to go. And it starts at 8:00a.m. in the morning. Which is probably a good reason for me to give the blogging a break and either hit the books or get some sleep.
Night!
