A week ago today I moved in.
Started classes on Monday, and am loving them. The psyc classes you can take over here are not as broad as the ones back home meaning you get to go really in-depth into whatever it is you're studying, like my drugs and behavio[u]r class or my adolescence class. The latter is giving me a real education in American culture, like the survey we had asking us which "group" we were in at high school to which answers like "popular," "jocks," "dorks" were given.
They also have a lot of publicity for sororities and fraternerties at the student hub on campus at the moment - another thing that really reminds me I could only be in America.
As far as immersion into American culture goes, one of the best things about International House is that it's about 50% American students, meaning I have two flatmates from the US, as well as the one from Korea. They've all been here for a quarter already and have been the greatest help, patiently answering my hundred and one questions about how to do / find / say anything and everything.
I've been out for dinner with all of them now, and that's another thing that's different here: meals. Instead of having one communal dining area and set eating times, there are various cafeteria-style eating places around campus and you use your pre-loaded ID card to purchase whichever food you choose at them: Mexican, pasta, donuts, salads, "jell-o," Ben and Jerry's icecream... There's a lot more freedom to eat what you want, when you want, with who you want, but I do miss the sense of community we get by all eating together back home.
