Yesterday at International Christian Fellowship, we got asked to share an 'unexpected blessing' we'd experienced recently. I chose my flatmate, sitting right next to me at the time, as she's been exceedingly helpful and friendly to this l'il new Kiwi girl in the big, wide world that is the United States! But I could have listed a dozen more blessings, mostly in the form of people, but also in the form of experiences, like watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean from the roof of the social sciences building [see pic]. Or waking up super early to watch the sunrise over San Diego's hills with fellow I-Housers at the same spot. Or the opportunity to get a bible study up-and-running in I-House.
Then there's been my fountain-of-knowledge host family, endless people at I-House, church, everywhere...
Sure there have been a few tough things, like like almost losing my voice when I first arrived, making it painful and funny-sounding to talk - was that from travelling too much or talking too much?! Or trying to chase up my tenant who has missed his last three rent payments, and has no known email address or landline, from half way around the world. And trying to find time for studies in between meeting people, getting stuff sorted, and - perhaps the most time-consuming of them all! - Facebook!
But all in all, I'm loving it here, and am excited to explore more.
