Classes start tomorrow, and I guess it's probably time for an update before I get snowed under with study and everything else...
So, in brief:
I arrived in LA Wednesday, from Paris, and caught a shuttle then Greyhound to Oceanside, a little north of San Diego, where my host parents picked me up. I stayed with them for a couple days and my host "mom" was a huge blessing considering I was as clueless as I was! She had worked for the international centre at UCSD so knew all the ropes, and took me in to campus on Thurs to get my ID card, US bank account and other necessities sorted.
Friday we had international students orientation in the morning with around 200 students from across the globe. Friday afternoon I moved into I-House and man, was it a nice feeling to finally unpack and know that tomorrow I don't have to jam all my gear back into that pack and force the zips shut before heaving it onto my back and hauling it to the bus / train station / boat / airport! Hallelujah.
Sat morning we had a campus tour, then beached it with a few Kiwis and a couple Koreans in the arv. Gorgeous beaches here.
Today I caught a ride to church - Coast Vineyard - with a girl from I-House and a bunch of her friends, then lunched with them at a Vietnamese restaurant afterwards. Ooh it's good to eat noodles again after leaving that kind of food behind somewhere before re-entering the Western world. I shopped this afternoon; it's going to be a shock having to cook for myself again after two years in the halls.
And finally this evening we had a "fireside gathering" / welcome night for the new I-House folk to meet the older ones; most people have been here for a quarter [term] already. People here are super friendly; I'm enjoying it.
