As the big cliche goes, a big part of travelling is about experiencing new things, right?
So I thought I'd update you with four new things I've had the pleasure to experience, or at least spectate on, in the case of the latter two:
1. Speed friendshipping: "Life's too busy to make friends the long way - why waste quality time? Just spare an hour of your Monday and you'll make new friends in an instant! Four minutes per person is all it takes folks, step right up!" A possible catch-phrase for this new-to-me concept, based on speed dating, which I had the joy of experiencing last night. Would have worked pretty well it seems, had not most of the people there been familiar I-House faces to begin with.
2. Graham crackers: Y'know on the American movies or the Saddle Club books, how they always seem to eat s'mores while around the campfire... well, graham crackers, unavailable in New Zealand to my knowledge, are a key component of them. Looks like a cracker, tastes like an arrowroot biscuit... It's a graham cracker!
3. KRUMPing: An acronym for Kingdom Rising Up Mighty Praise, this apparently aggressive style of dancing originated from inner city communities as a safe way to express oneself without violence. Some say it's a way to express your praise to God. Definitely impressive to watch, once you understand what it's all about. [Note: I am yet to experience this firsthand, as yet I have only watched it.]
4. Spoken word: Another part of Jesus, Justice & Poverty, the interactive Christian social justice conference I attended on the weekend, this is an impressive new artform. Like open mic poetry, but with a bit of a rap element, it tends to have rhythm somehow. Done well, it's beautiful, powerful, moving. Barbs, you would love this. [I was also more of a spectator than a performer when it came to this experience too.]
