Caught up with the lovely Sabine today.
For those of you who don't know who she is, she's a German girl who stayed with our family for a couple months a few years back. I met up with her and Pia, her sister, in Christchurch one night, months later, but sometime after returning to Germany, she lost contact with our family. So it wasn't until September last year when I happened to leave a message on a Kerikeri website - probably during a bored patch while working on my Stone Store research project - and she somehow came across it, that we got back in touch.
And though I didn't get to meet up with her in Europe, it turned out she was coming here to meet up with a friend of hers - someone she met in Europe who happens to be from Northland! - and today we finally saw each other again in person. Had lunch together at aptly-named Ocean View Terrace (yes, you can see the ocean from the dining area, surprisingly enough), discussed the highs and lows of travelling with a huge pack on your back, and reminisced about NZ, Rach's German (which I will not publish on here) and their bets on Shortland Street.
Was amazed to discover her Kiwi friend, who's lived abroad seven years, still retained a thick NZ accent. I got hassles about picking up the American one on my second day here! (Don't get me wrong, I love the old American accents, but I wanna retain my Kiwi one... How else am I gonna start conversations with random strangers?!) When I asked how he'd managed this incredible feat, I was told there are hundreds of Kiwis living here in San Diego... News to me - he was the fifth one I've met.
This journal entry is dedicated to Sabine, who knew half my stories (nearly!) before I even told her them, thanks to the wonders of the Internet.
To everyone else: I would love to hear from you, so please comment, and check out "San Diego 4" for pix celebrating the late Dr Seuss' birthday, a ma-shi-so Korean dinner, pink clouds, and more.
