Day 39. To Santiago de Compostella
Finito de Camino. A picture of drenched pilgrims at the end of today's short walk to the Cathedral. We arrived at 10:45 am (1:45 am Vancouver) on November 3 under heavy rains Happy and a bit sad also. We need a day for thoughts to sink in. More on these tomorrow.
We walked 787 km (489 miles) in 37 walking days plus 2 rest days. We averaged 21.3 km (13 1/4 miles) per walk and walked for a total of 199 1/2 hours. Doesn't sound like a lot of time but our feet think it is. We also climbed and descended 10,140 meters (32,600 feet). In all this we covered about 4 km per hour (2.4 miles) including interim rest stops. I could easily go back to accounting.
We attended the 12:00 pilgrim Mass which was really quite nice with the magnificent organ accompanying a very sweet voiced nun as she led the congregation in hymns. I'm sure the priest's message was inspiring but unfortunately we only picked up bits & pieces of spanish words. I think the reading was from Luke 2, but since the Gideons don't seem to have been to Spain to place a Bible in every hotel room, I can't look it up. Perhaps fifty pilgrims plus another fifty in a school group that walked only the last five days (the 100 km necessary to receive the Compostela) so the Mass did not include the swinging of the incense used in historic times to sweeten the air.
With Compostelas signed & stamped, the sound of rain on the cobble stoned streets & a brandy in hand, these two pelegrinos are off to bed.......and no alarm to set. Life Is Good.
Buenos Noches to all.
