Day 23. To Leon
The cathedral in Leon at night. We will tour tomorrow as we are taking a rest day, our second one overall.
Boring walk into the city with a couple of dangerous walks on busy roads. The guidebooks advise a bus into the city. We are atoning for our shunning of the "poor pilgrim" albergues by refusing to take any motor transport for even a step of the Camino. Another nice hotel tonight.
Picked up my Ecco walking shoes sent by Brian to the Lista de Correos (General Delivery) together with moleskin (not available here) & tape. Charged me 30 Euros import tax and we didn't have the language or energy to argue. Was devastated an hour later in the hotel to find my left foot has expanded and I cannot wear them on the trail, at least not now. Sorry, Brian!
Went to El Corte Ingles, a large Spanish department store, where I previously purchased the toe-nail destroyers in Pamplona, and got a FOURTH pair of shoes. Pack getting heavy with shoes for these ugly, sore dawgs; wallet getting lighter & Spanish economy quickly coming out of recession due to our Camino!
Lynn here: I love this place, as I did Pamplona & Burgos. I seem to come alive in these cities with their gorgeous architecture, narrow cobbled streets, flower boxes overflowing with colour, & the cafes humming with locals and tourists. I'll have a cafe Americano, please, and a sit at a sidewalk table to watch the passing parade!
We are sitting in a wonderful bar, nursing a brandy & listening to great music; I could stay up all night......and we can sleep in tomorrow; no alarm clock and no Camino!
