It's a windy, rainy start to the moning but by 11:00 it has eased enough for us to set out on our walk down to the canal.
Once we get on the towpath, out of the wind, it's not too cold at all. Unfortunately the gales have almost stripped many of the leaves from the trees but the thick layers of them covering the path and floating on the canal still make a colourful scene.
Nick W scoots back and forth on the motorbike and when we meet at the edge of Meilhan he is there to tell us everything in the town is closed. No warming coffee then.
Having walked down with us Grete chooses to ride back on the bike while we retrace our route. Even more leaves and twigs have fallen as we return and there are a couple showers which dapple the water with circles. A heron scrambles into the air and flaps away over the bridge.
Five minutes from the farm we are tacking through a Cape Horn squall when we get a call on the walkie-talkies; would we like soup for lunch. By the time we are inside with our coats off Grete has cups of steaming soup ready for us all.
Through the afternoon we have a mixture of sun and showers, so w stay inside reading.
At 18:00 we are invited to apertitif with Claudie. Due to the cold and wind Nick opts to stay warm n the van while the others go across to the house.
Claudie has prepared a proper litte feast of canapes and nibbles to go with champagne. Some things are from her garden; cherry tomatoes and radish. Her herbs flavour cheese tartlets and there are olives and cheese. Last Christmas Claudie had aperitif with us in the van and we had sausage rolls, so as a special treat she has made some for the first time for us. A glass of champagne and a selection comes out to the van for Nick.
By the time it's all fininshed no-one wants any supper.
