The red sky last night brought no shepherd's delight, only a morning of heavy rain and grey sky. We decide there's no point moving yet but Ali and Grete put on coats and wander around the town.
Fouras has a ruined headland fort, a long fine beach and a pleasant woodland walking area. Many of the houses are typical French spa-town style; tiled fronts, stained glass, ornate plasterwork and witch's-hat turrets. It must be a lively place in summer but today is empty in the bad weather. Bad weather visited here in 2010 when storm Xanthia demolished 44 houses.
The spare time is used well in the vans too. Our water pump has been noisy and is not shutting off. Nick W removes and cleans the filter, after which it doesn't pump water at all. Fearing the worst Nick searches the interent and finds a dealer on the way to La Rochelle, whose website lists the correct pump at €130.
Meanwhile Nick W removes it and we find some screws are loose and letting in air. He dismantles, cleans and reassembles it and it works perfectly. No need for a new one - great!
After soup and bread for lunch we set off in slightly lighter rain to La Rochelle. Arriving at the first listed camperstop we discover vans are no longer allowed here so we reprogramme the satnavs to Les Minimes on the other side of town. A twenty minute tour through busy traffic brings us to the car park beside a vast marina. A dense forest of masts stretches out covering the best part of 1 sq.km. As night falls the harbour becomes a colourful light show with mast markers, street lights and blue lamps over a bridge.
Grete cooks pork slices with plum sauce and wine flows freely until quite late.
