Not much to report as of late. The weather has been very wintery, with lots of rain and wind, so we pretty much stayed in all weekend. On Saturday I didn't even bother to get dressed, it was definitely a duvet day! We just chilled out and then ordered pizza for dinner, unfortunately we couldn't get it from our favourite place as we don't have a phone and they don't have online ordering (luckily the internet was working on Saturday!)
But the internet in our apartment is being very tempermental and once again we can't connect to any of the unsecured networks anymore, so I'm sitting in the library using the free wi-fi. It's actually a really nice library as it was renovated to the tune of around $140 million and it feels more like a shopping mall than a stuffy library. Luckily it is practically within spitting distance from our apartment so I haven't got very far to go to keep in touch with the outside world. Not having the internet on tap makes you realise how you can take things for granted and appreciate them more when you do have it. And being away from home has made me appreciate all the little things that we do take for granted. Also, seeing all the homeless people on the street makes me feel very lucky that I have a roof over my head, warmth, food and people I love around me.
I think the best part of this SF experience is things have been put in perspective. Instead of focusing on all the things we haven't got (jobs, our own house, money to get married, etc. etc) I've started to focus on the things we have got (each other, our families, good health) as I see all the people around me struggling to get by. We might think that after attending University in the UK that we're in debt, but after talking to Americans who have been to College our debt is nothing in comparison (they owe around £60,000 in school fees!). So a lot of them hold down a job whilst studying or they have 2 jobs after finishing their degrees. Like the UK, it is too expensive to buy property in SF, so everyone rents and they expect to rent for most of their lives. But they don't let it get them down, they just get on with it. Which is something I really admire.
Sorry, I got a bit carried away there! Too much time to think...
Well we've got less than 3 weeks left in SF and we feel ready to come home as Steve is missing his bed, his big TV and his PS3 - and of course his family! There are still a few things we want to see and do, so Steve has got the last 2 weeks off work so we can be SUPER tourists and make the most of our time here. So hopefully I'll have more interesting things to blog about later on!
