Today we decided to explore Chinatown as it's not there far away, about 10-15 minute walk. It's basically one long street of shops selling tacky stuff or chinese furniture/antiques.
The only thing we foudn we wanted to buy was some prints of really cool chinese paintings but we couldn't decide which ones to buy so we went away to think about it.
There weren't as many restaurants as I was expecting but we still had trouble deciding where to go to eat. Luckily this woman thrust a leaflet into our hands to get free potstickers (dumplings) and green tea ice cream so we headed to that restaurant.
We ordered what we usually have back home: pork buns, prawn dumplings, pork dumplings and the potstickers. The waitress said this was a small order of food so she suggested we order some noodles as well. It didn't take much persuading so we also ordered mixed meat chow mein which had chicken, pork and beef and veggies. The noodles were really nice but the dim sum wasn't as good as back home, but we ate everything so it couldn't have been that bad! The free green tea ice cream was pretty good after becoming accustomed to the initial weird taste. This lunch came to about £15 which is the most expensive meal we've had so far!
There wasn't much else to see in Chinatown so we decided to walk up to Fisherman's Wharf as it didn't look that far away on the map. The route we took led us thru Little Italy where there are loads of fantastic looking Italian restaurants and cafes. We passed Coit Tower and St Peter and Paul's Church and we walked passed Lombard Street and could just about see how bendy it is!
When we found the Wharf it was as we'd expected as we'd been told it was really touristy and not really a Wharf with fish or fishermen! The only thing I really wanted to see was the Sea lions but there were so many people around that we decided we'd come back another day.
So we headed back to the hotel via Chinatown so we could take another look at the paintings we wanted to buy but we still couldn't decide which ones we liked best! We found the artist's name and Steve thought we might find them on the Internet so we didn't buy any.
We stopped off for a sit down in Union Square and chilled out in the sun until Steve started to get burnt! So when we got back to the hotel he was laid up in bed with a wet flannel on his poor red head! We were both really knackered and Steve being poorly meant we didn't go out to a rock club with Martin and his wife Star which is a shame as his friend's band was playing that night.
Instead we tried to order a pizza online as we were too tired to leave the hotel! But that didn't work (one website didn't even list the toppings on the pizzas) so we ended up getting burgers, fries and onion rings from a place on the corner. It was run by a really friendly Chinese couple and they also served Chinese food and lots of other random meals! We decided to get take-out and eat the burgers back at the hotel - we found the cartoon channel so we watched Steve's fave show. The food was really good (our first "American" meal!) so we'll be going back to that place for more I'm sure! The only complaint would be that they put a huge slice of a whole onion in the burger!
