We were pretty knackered after our trip to Japantown yesterday so we decided to have a bit of a lie in before having brunch at the diner that we can see from our hotel window. It's called Olympic Cafe in reference to the Olympic Games, but believe me you wouldn't be doing any such activities after a meal there!
We took a bit of time choosing what to order as there's so much choice and multiple combinations of breakfasts you can have. Even when you think you've narrowed it down to sausage and eggs you've still got to choose what type of sausage you want and how you want your eggs cooked!
We both knew we wanted to try the pancakes so Steve ordered some with his sausage and eggs and I ordered french toast with mine. We got our eggs over-easy and the amount of bright yellow yolk that came out of them was amazing, they must have big chickens here! Actually we've noticed alot of the eggs have white egg shells so not sure if that makes a difference. Anyway, after we'd wolfed down the savoury stuff, we had a little taste of each other's sweet second course and we both agreed that we preferred the pancakes as they were light and fluffy. We also agreed that we didn't like the butter that came on top, just pour on lots of syrup! Steve has also now found his favourite drink, a french vanilla coffee - ooo la la!
We wobbled back to the hotel and just chilled out until we decided it was too much of a nice day to stay in all day. So I suggested walking along the Embarcadero which curves all the way around the southwestern edge of the city up to Fisherman's Wharf. It's about a 30 min walk so we felt like we were burning off some of the calories we'd consumed earlier!
We looked around the Ferry Building which has mostly restaurants and shops selling gourmet foods, there was even one place where you can buy grow-your-own-mushrooms! Outside the building you can see Oakland Bay Bridge and the ferries taking people to the various little islands. Quite a few of the restaurants had outside seating and it seemed like a good place to relax with a beer but we were still full from brunch!
So we decided to carry on walking up towards Fisherman's Wharf which was another 30 mins walk. The sidewalks (sorry, pavements) are really wide and perfect for all the cyclists, in-line skaters and skateboarders showing off. By the time we reached the Wharf I suggested getting an ice cream and Steve said he was thinking exactly the same thing even though the weather was getting a little chilly. So in our search for the cold stuff we stumbled upon all the tourist shops and restaurants of Pier 39 that we'd missed on our first pit-stop to the Wharf! It really is like an amusement park and yeah it's a bit tacky but it's still good fun and the most amazing smells waft out from all the seafood restaurants! We saw the sea lions lazing around and took some video of the noisy little beggars.
We saw quite a few people walking around with ice creams and then we spotted a place called Dreyers which had waffle cones. We ordered a chocolate cone with a scoop of Dulce De Leche ice cream and a scoop of Double Fudge Brownie ice cream. Luckily we only got 1 cone to share as it was massive! But it cost less than $7 which is about £3.50 which is unbelievable compared to back home. Anyway, the ice cream was fantastic so I'm sure we'll be having more of it!
I have just realised that I probably write about food more than anything else in this blog! Not that I'm obsessed or anything! Don't worry people, we are doing so much walking around when we're sightseeing (at least 3-4 hours) that we're not super-sized just yet, in fact I think I've lost weight!
Anyway, the weather has now turned cold and cloudy, not as awful as back home but the indian summer over here seems to be over. Steve is quite relieved as it was getting pretty hot in his office and he's more accustomed to this gloomy weather! But we're still smiling and having a great time!
