Krystal's Travels
So I forgot to write about yesterday's class experience. Beth, Kali, and I went to a class (lecture) on the DDR. Of course it was overflowing despite the fact that we were there 15 minutes early. Sort of understood some things he was talking about but I don't know the relevence exactly. Then Kali and I went to a literature class on the use of myths in modern works. This is where the story gets interesting...
First of all the room was changed so it took forever to figure out where it was. A lot of other people made the same mistake though. Then we finally squeeze into the classroom and the first words out of the prof's mouth are "This is a really difficult class. If you don't have any prior knowledge of mythology then this class isn't for you." Ugh. Then she's talking and asks a question directed at Kali. Kali didn't understand the question and I answered for her. That immediately told her that we were exchange students and of course asked us that in front of the whole class. She then asked if there were any other exchange students (there were 2 others) and she continued to tell us that this class would be too hard for us. Basically the only thing that kept Kali there was that she didn't want to give the prof the satisfaction of getting rid of another student (several other people had already left). I'm going to try and stay in there though mostly because I want to write my capstone on the topic. We're starting out with Niebelungenlied including Wagner's text so I really want to use the information I get in this class. Otherwise I probably would have found a different lit class. I went ahead and signed up on the roster and talked to the professor about my referat (kind of a discussion leading thing that everybody has to do). Once I told her that I was really interested in the topic and that I had a little bit of knowledge already she was very nice and explained things more to me. I told her that I was writing a paper on Niebelungenlied next semester and I think that impressed her. Now I just have to read Hebbel's version of Die Niebelungen by Wednesday. I still need to find it though. I bought the original Niebelungenlied today so that I can use it for comparison for my paper but I couldn't find the Wagner or the Hebbel texts. Actually I did find the Wagner texts but I couldn't remember exactly which ones to buy because his version (Der Ring des Niebelungen) is actually 4 operas. So I have to buy all 4 separately. Oh well. It's not like they'll get good use next semester.
