Krystal's Travels
Sorry it's taken me so long to update. Last weekend took a lot out of me so I was pretty tired all week and never got around to updatin about my weekend with Johann Friedrich. I went ahead and dated the next few entries with the dates I was actually in the cities.
I left Friday after my class for Johann's. We didn't do much Friday evening except eat dinner since I didn't get in until about 7. We had salmon for dinner and then looked at pictures. He had a ton to show me and I brought the ones that Mimi sent with me too.
Saturday Johann and Artrud took me to Cologne for the day. I finally got to see the Cologne Cathedral, which is absolutely gorgeous by the way. Definitely a work of art. Unfortunately we couldn't go back to the shrine in the back of the church though because it was closed to tourists. We did go down into the treasury though where they keep all of the old chalices and robes and staffs. It was amazing.
Cologne is definitely more of a modern city than Leipzig. I think suffered more destruction in the war though. That and it wasn't a part of the DDR obviously. Definitely more touristy though. There were tons of Americans there and the majority didn't speak German. That always gives me a bit of a self esteem boost.
They also have special eau de toilette that they make there so I bought some. The water used in it comes from the Rhine. That's what the picture of the 4711 building is about.
We were going to go into the Germanisch-Roemisch Museum (Germanic-Roman Museum) but it was closing in 30 minutes so it wasn't really worth it. They had some of the ruins displayed outside though which was interesting to see. Cologne is one of the oldest cities in Germany so it has a lot of history.
Then we went along the Rhine River and looked around for a while before we sat down to have a Koelsch. Koelsch is the specialty beer in Cologne. It's not too bad. They have it at one bar in Leipzig so I had tried it before. After our beer we headed back to Attendorn. Something didn't sit well with me though cause on the way back I got sick and had to make Johann pull over on the Autobahn so I could throw up. He barely made it over in time cause there was construction on the road so he couldn't pull over right away. So the rest of the evening I pretty much stayed in my room trying to feel better. They kept trying to get me to eat but my stomach was so jumpy that the thought of food made me sick. Not so fun. But outside of that it was a great day.
