A soft mist hides the distant fields this morning but it soon burns off as the sun climbs and threatens another scorcher.
We say goodbye and set off towards Le Mans, continuing a reverse run of 2014 when we visited the Le Mans car museum. The roads are long and straight with not much traffic and we make good progress, including a stop at an Intermarche for fuel and food.
The north circular around Le Mans is easy and once west of that landmark it's 22 easy miles to an ACSI site at Brulon, where we intend to keep up our new tradition of standing still at weekends. We check in for two nights at €15/night and find a nice shady pitch. The fridge works on 230v so Ali sets about with disinfectant and cleans it thoroughly, then gets the bedding washed before fetching ice-creams from the site bar to cool us in the 34C heat. In the background are the noises of people playing in the nearby lake.
When the washing finishes we go down to the bar for a cooling beer. It's lovely in the shade looking over the tree lined park with its lake and little beach. At half past beer o'clock we go for a wander round the lakeside. An area of about two football pitches forms a sandy beach under a line of silver birch. A light breeze wafts cooling air over us and the sunbathers. We follow the path around the lake passing little fishing platforms and an adventure playground. At the far side are toilets and showers and next to that block is a covered picnic area. A couple of communal BBQs are smoking away and it is really cooling in the shade.
Our circuit brings us back to the edge of the campsite and entry is through the bar. We consider eating here but the waitress says sorry, they are fully booked so we return to the van for supper.; the remainder of last night's ragu with some chilli red beans added and served with rice and wine at an ambient 30C
The site doesn't have pitch and path lighting so when it gets dark the sky is so full of stars that we can only make out the plough, the rest is just a brilliant jumble of twinklers.
