The first stop on our road trip was Whitianga, which is situated on the Coromandel Peninsula about 2 hours from Auckland. After filling the boot and back seats full of bags and camping gear we headed to the east coast. The journey took us through the Coromandel forest where we got to see some lovely scenery. The car we have rented is a small 2005 Daihatsu Sirion and is very easy to drive and having power steering unlike the good old fiesta made it alot easier. At Whitianga we pitched our tent at the Mercury Bay Motorcamp, a nice little campsite about a five minute walk from the town centre. We spent our two days here relaxing with a few beers, exploring the town and bay and getting used to the camping lifestyle. Our first night in the tent, needless to say was a bit different from the hostels we have been staying in but after a shop in the local town we got ourselves a sleeping bag and a couple of cushions and it soon felt like home.
