A one hour drive south of Whangamata brought us to our next destination, Waihi. We are really enjoying the short drives through the country side and the scenery is amazing. Its like the North Yorkshire Moors but everywhere!! The main attraction of Waihi is the gold mining industry. We found another motorcamp in Waihi, this time abit closer to nature as our tent was pitched right next to a duck pond and amongst a few chickens, sheep and a pig! Our one day here was spent visiting the Martha Gold Mine and the small town. The town was quite similar to the previous two we had visited, very small and local, quite a change from the cities we visited in America! Before we headed to our next destination we made time to stop at Karanghake Gorge, which had been recommended in our guide book. The gorge is where the old mine used to be and is now a popular tourist spot for walking and exploring. As the theme of our road trip is to relax, we didn't push ourselves and went for a short 1 hour walk. We don't want to be tired for our next destination!!
