We arrived back in nelson to yet another warm welcome from Dave and all the housemates! We had an awesome night!! We started off by having a few drinks and chats at the house. I popped off for a bit to go and see Lauren and Cherry for a drink. They had travelled over from Wellington for New Years with Cherry's mum and went Kayaking on the Abel Tasman and were staying in Nelson. I took them to a cool bar called The Freehouse which Dave had taken us to a couple of times. It is a cool bar which is a converted church with a Yurt outside in the beer garden. But the best thing about it is the local brewed beer and Cider! After a couple of drinks and a catch up Lauren and Cherry headed back and I went to see the others. We went to The Vic so that we could be there for midnight as 4 of the housemates were working there. The atmosphere was amazing and everyone was in a great mood! After New Years and lots of hugs and kisses we all trooped down to Liquid where more of the housemates were working and there was a band on so we culd dance the night away! We ended up staying quite a few days in Nelson, it became a running joke that we kept on saying that we were leaving, saying goodbye someone would find a reason for us to stay one more night (the roads closed on the west coast and there were landslides on Arthur's pass, Dave had more days of work to spen with us, I managed to get a nights work cash in hand at one of the housemates bars that they worked in) . . . and then never acually go! The house was definitely a 'a Hotel California!'. We didn't complain though, we wanted the reasons to stay and we had a great time chilling in the house, cooking nice dinners, going to the river etc. On our last night there was the most amazing thunderstorm! Nelson had blue hot skies all day and then in the evening all of a sudden it sounded like there were explosions coming closer and closer! Nelson is surrounded by mountains and the sea and the clouds seemed to swoop from the sea and all around us still leaving the blue skies above! The lightning and thunder was crazy and massive and booming and the clouds changed from black to red to pink to grey, timed perfectly with the sun setting. A perfect send off. The next morning Dave went back to work and the roads on the west coast and Arthur's Pass were open again, so we said goodbye for real and drove off. It was so amazing to find a place on our travels where we could stay and feel so welcome. We are so grateful to Dave and his housemates for having us. We have made awesome friends that we hope to see in the future somewhere in the world!
