We stopped at a town called Pahi for lunch as it had a Giant Moreton Bay Fig Tree it was massive! The base roots were as high as James! Eventually our drive led us up to Dargaville then down the North Head of the Kaipara Harbour the landscape was completely different even the houses, the roads went very straight and the land flat with lots of farms and wooden clad houses with porches. The end of the head got more hilly again with lots of forests, the track was Neely gritted so it was a little hairy and slidy in the camper!! We then got down to Pueto Point, a beautiful little hamlet on the very end. The campsite was a little green looking out over the cliff edge to sea! And there was a community hall next door with a kitchen and showers and bunks. We had an evening stroll along the beach and cooked dinner in the hall kitchen. The nice man in the camper next door told us about the dunes ride up to the light house it sounded good so James booked it with the man across the road. He picked us up in the morning! It was definately the highlight so far!! He had a 4by4 buggy which we strapped ourselves into then headed up the beach! He took us along the beach and up to the top of the dunes where he told us all about the history of the wildlife, the ships, the lighthouse and took us to an amazing point where you could see into the harbour, out to the south head and over to sea (every so often taking us down STEEP dunes and revving round steep corners to see how much I would scream!! (He was over 70!!!) He then took us to the lighthouse which was beautiful. He is the only one with a key so we were privileged enough to go in, it had stopped being used in 1947 due to the sheer work that the keepers had to go through in such rough conditions, (the lighthouse is the only one with a porch because of the sand storms) and ships had started to dock more in the Auckland Harbour. We then went back and he took us to his for a coffee and smoked snapper head!! He then took us down to see the old school and the seals in the harbour. We then said our goodbyes and headed back up the head to our next stop.
