We decided that our next destination should be Pancake rocks down the west coast. The drive down there was stunning along the dramatic coast line and lush green bush. Pancake rocks are amazing rock formations on the coastline formed by layers of limestone and debris and algae all eroding in different times causing the stacked pancake effect! Amazing blowholes have also been calved out by the rough west coast and at high tide with good swell (how we saw them!) they cause amazing sprays and noises. That night we camped nearby in Punakaiki. It was a posher campsite than the DOC (department of conservation) ones that we were used to but it was great to have a warm shower and wash our clothes in a machine! The next morning we thought it only right to make pancakes for breakfast and for James (nickname Pancake!!) to save one and eat it at Pancake Rocks . . . Photographic evidence to follow!!
We then set on our way. The day before we had received a phone call from Nabil (the French guy we met on the Heaphy) saying that he was in Greymouth and that it was very . . . grey. He wanted to know if we could give him a lift when we passed. We could and we did!
