We decided to explore the coast to the far east of Wellington before going to the city. We weren't really sure what was down there as nobody had written anything on our map!! It was awesome!!! We are so glad we went. The road was beautiful up to Cape Palliser light house. And the sea was amazing! So clear and the waves were amazing!!! Far too reefy and rocky and massive to go in unless you really knew what you were doing in there but it was fun watching some guys surf for a while! Further up we found soooo many seals! At first you didn't see them as they look exactly like the rocks and blend in so well. But once we saw one we saw them all! It was great watching them swim and then bask in the sun! There was on big mummy seal that was about 4 times the size of all the others beached on the pebbles, snoozing contently, every so often opening her eyes to give us a stare :)
After the seals we went to the lighthouse at the point. It was a zillion steps (well maybe a couple of hundred) up a steep hill . . . James ran them and I puffed and panted, every so often stopping to admire the view! The view from the top though was amazing! You could see over to Wellington and the South Island! There was a cool free site on the coast and it was right on the seafront and really sheltered. Perfect for a bask in the sun to read our books and chill for the rest of the day! The sunset that evening was stunning! We recon it is the first time we have seen the sun go all the way down to the horizon as there were no hills in front I us just the sea . . . Although we did soon realise that the clouds we thought were in the horizon was actually more of the South Island!
