We left Maitai Bay and headed south via the Manginui Fish and Chip Shop 'the best in NZ!' for lunch. We had battered snapper and chips, it was schmasty!! Then we headed down to a little Island that we were told abouth by a lovely couple whilst we were staying at Pouto Point. you have to drive out on a causeway to get there. It is an eco centre where they protect the Kiwi's. It is such an amazing place and we were avid Kiwi fans as soon as Chris and Daryl (Looking after the Island) told us about them. We were completelyt clueless and didn't realise how endangered they are. We had a walk arround the island readying ourselves for the night walk as ay 9:30 pm we met up with Chris and a few people who were wwooffing down the road. We all had these little red torch lights to guide us as the kiwi are not bothered by them. We creeped arround the island pausing at any sound or rustle, listening out for them. After an hour or so there was alot of rusteling and one popped out quick enough for some of us to see it and some of us only to see a shadow. Chris left us to it after that and then the wooffers went off too. We decided to stay on a little longer. It was alot quieter with just the two of us and we were happy to just stand/crouch and wait. Sure enough we saw one!!! They are such funny little creatures This guy had his bum in the air and was sniffing arround in the bush for his dinner we watched him for a good 20 mins and as we went to go (is was midnight!) he popped his head up and called into the sky. We were super chuffed :)
The next morning we headed out on some of the kayacks that they had on the island and explored the bay.
