We arrived at Paihia on Wednesday afternoon. The sun had come out and it was beautiful. We parked up in a camp filled with olive trees and run by a really nice guy. He bought us over a load of oysters which he had just shelled and told us we could help ourselves to the lemons on his tree :) We went for a nice walk along the beach. The next morning we got up for a boat trip that we booked the day before, we decided it would be a good way to see the bay properly. It was fantastic! We spent the day on a tall ship. We were lucky as it was the first sailing of the season for tourists so it was quiet. The boat is part of a non profit organisation and the money goes towards winter trips on the boat where they take local kid out for a week and teach them how to fish, swim and of course sail! It's pretty cool. We got to muck in with hoisting the sails etc. The Skipper asked if any one wanted to swing of the rope from the boat into the sea and of course only James and I were the ones who said yes! We also stopped of at an island and walked up to the top for a stunning view. Then whilst everyone went on the dingy back to the ship James and I swam :) it was a fab day. Later on we bought a second hand surfboard from Nick, a guy who worked on the boat. James is now a happy chappy! We then drove over to Rawhiti where we stayed in the garden of such a lovely couple; Vic and Barbara. In the morning we headed on the Whangamumu track which is a 6hour tramping track round the base of a beautiful peninsula. On the first cove that we came to we spotted some dolphins! We spent a while photographing them from a far. There was a yacht in the bay and the couple came over with their dingy and offered to take us out! It was so cool, the dolphins were swimming along with the boat, there were about 8 of them. Massive luck and such a highlight! The couple dropped us off at the old whaling station which was pretty gruesome but interesting, we had a little walk up a nice waterfall and then carried on with the walk. The hills were steep!!! But it was worth it for the views at the top over the bay of islands! When we got back another couple (Barbara and Mederick) had arrived to do the walk the next day. We had a lovely evening chatting over beers and pasta :) We were sad to leave Barbera and Vics place as they were so welcoming and the walks and views in that area are amazing. But onwards and southwards!
