The three of us (Nabil included!) set on our way down the west coast to the glaciers. The landscape changed again from big bushy mountains to even bigger snow capped mountains! We stopped in Franz Josef and sorted out our activity for he next day and then walked to the beginning of the Franz Glacier up the terminal moraine valley. It was so impressive and made us really excited for the next day when we would get to go on the ice at Fox!! We then went up to a DOC free site at Gillespies Beach. It was food for a freesite and had some grass for Nabil to camp on. It was raining but we managed to cook under a shelter whilst watching the parrots try to break into people's vans and cars! The next morning we all got up bright and early and headed to Fox where we were fitted with boots and crampons and then bussed up to the glacier! The day was awesome, we were on a full day walking trip with a guide. We got to walk quite a way up the glaciers with the crampons stopping to look at Moulins (water holes/falls in the ice) and Crevices etc! The weather was so changeable which made it even better to look at. The guide was really good with loads of knowledge and chipping away with his ice axe for steps or to make areas safe to look into etc. It was definitely worth it, we had an awesome day!
The three of us journeyed down the coast again to a beautiful (yet sandfly filled) lakeside DOC campsite called Lake Paringa 'twas beautiful!
