Next stop nelson lakes! We drove to the less touristy Lake Rotoroa. This time there were more sandflies!!! James went for a lovely run to a waterfall on the west side of the lake that he says looks a lot like lydford gorges' whie lady waterfall! He said it was really satisfying and hilly! I made dinner and we had a nice chilled evening in the van. The next morning James ran the other side of the lake whilst I made pancakes for breakfast. I was getting very wound up that I could not really go for a walk and if I went outside I would be eaten alive by the sandflies. We had an experiment though . . . We bought a blow up dingy in Rangiora and decided to blow it up and see if the flies would follow us out on the lake. We hopped into the boat fully covered with leggings, long sleeves and scarves (even though it was boiling hot sunshine! Sure enough the sandflies stopped following and we were able to strip down to our swimmers and float and sunbathe hipster smugly watching the people on the side of the lake running in and out of their cars to take photos of the stunning view over the water and run back! We used this tactic on Lake Rotoiti as well! The cool thing about both lakes (apart from the amazing views) was the eels! Especially on lake Rotoiti. They lurked under the jetty and when you duped your toes or finger in the water they came swarming!!! We watched them for ages!
