We drove to a lovely spot by a cluster of lakes. We stayed on Lake Kaiiwi. The bird there were so inquisitive as we set up. We had some dinner then swam in the lake just as the sun was setting, it was so warm and the water was so clear (not like in England!!) The next morning we woke up early and set off to the beach for breakfast as we really wanted to see the sea as we ha heard the roar of waves from the lake! We took our eggs and bread and stove onto Omamari beach. It was amazing the waves were MASSIVE! We sat and cooked and ate our breakie and hung out for a while as it was mesmerising. We then journeyed up to see Tane Mahuta (the lord of the forest) one of the biggest Giant Kauri Trees, he was over 2000 years old! Then we drove an stopped off at an amazing view point for lunch at Omapere were you could look across to the other opening of the Hokinga Harbour to the huge sand dunes and sea. We went on to catch the ferry over the river at Rawene onto a beautiful scenes road up to Ahipara. This is where the 90 mile beach starts it was cool going onto the beach and looking up the coast. We originally tries to camp at shipwrecks bay, which was beautiful but the campsite had obviously changed hands and unfortunately after paying we moved on as we didn't feel that comfortable there. But it was all worth while as it was still early and we managed to make it up to Rarawa a DOC campsite which is lovely!
