The overnight bus was surely an experience to get to hue! I was on the left hand sleeper and Becky was in the middle bit meaning we were fairly close. A Vietnamese local must have had a hard seat ticket and plonked himself right In between us. Fair enough. I listened to some music and drifted off and when I woke up during the night I was in complete shock. I sat up and looked to my right and the Vietnamese man had his hand on Beckys shoulder, pretty much about to feel her up. As soon as he saw me he quickly sat back down and went to sleep. I woke Becky up and told her what was going on and we were on edge for the rest of the night. The man also kept putting his feet on us during the night. After the first five times we were polite, then I tried to mime how I would kick him in the face if he Didnt stop touching us. It was a really horrendous experience and no one would help and just kept telling us to be quiet. Back home that boyo wouldn't have lasted two seconds on a Belfast metro!
Our hideous night bus arrived in hue at around 9 and luckily 'the amazing homestay' was just down the street. We checked in and organised our motorbike tour for the next day to do the hai van pass from top gear. Literally can't wait! Afterwards we went for some breakfast in a cafe where I had a tasty omelette. We checked out the map but there isn't really much to do. Hue is more of a stopover place before you get to better things, like the beach!! We found the forbidden city so set off on a trek over the bridge and though the town. A man selling a cyclo tour followed us for roughly 45 minutes so we eventually gave in after bartering down to 120,000 dong for two people (6 dollars). The tour turned out to be pretty hilarious, especially being called 'plump' after knocking the cyclo over. We visited ho chi min's house (ha) and then some random archway and then a lake. It wasn't really worth the money but it was a good laugh. The cyclo dropped us off at the forbidden city were we went inside and walked around. It was pretty beautiful! It was also cool because it was still in the same condition as it was when the Vietnam war happened, so we were able to see the full effects.
We then trekked it home again, got showered and went for dinner in a nice restaurant that had a happy hour deal with free bruschetta and fruit platter. Sold. I ordered chicken and noodles and Becky got beef and rice. On our walk back we bumped into Jacob and seb who we met in Hanoi! We caught up and chatted to them about their travels in the backpackers. While we were chatting a few more travellers joined us including this one really interesting American called Steve. He is a travel writer and goes to places like Pakistan and Nepal and has to try and undercover what secret CIA operations are operating. He has been arrested in Laos for entering a private military Zone and was kept and interrogated for three days. He was absolutely fascinating and we could have chatted to him all night! However our tour starts at 8 am so we headed to bed and had a sleep, interrupted by the guy in the next dorm vomiting all night. Lovely!
