It was with a heavy heart that we said goodbye to Milena and Ivan, the four of us made a connection, so much laughter and great conversation! . Ivan's dinner of Čobanac was outstanding, cooked over the fire outside , it was a taste sensation! We were sent on our way laden with vegetables and fruit from the garden and, joy of joys, Milena's jam, tomato purée and sundried tomatoes!
As we headed south, the lush green plains were replaced by immense, densely wooded mountains. The highway goes straight through them, some of the tunnels stretching for several kilometres. Signs at the entrance warn of possible bears and wolves.... And each tunnel has a name.
No matter how hard I try, I cannot capture the majesty of the mountains on film. They dominate the landscape and suck you in. By the time we reach Zadar on the coast, the forests have given way to stunted bushes clinging stubbornly to stark, unrelenting rock, leading down to the sparkling Adriatic.
Zadar was disappointing, I don't think we were ready for the crowds of tourists . We did manage to find a great restaurant to kick start us on the amazing seafood the Dalmatian coast is famous for.
The drive to Split was very enjoyable and we thanked our lucky stars that we know our way around and found the port quite easily. We parked our car in the queue for the ferry and walked to our favourite restaurant in the old city, Vila Spiza, where we had a huge plate of fried smelt. It was packed and the food was up to its usual high standard.
It is only a forty-five minute ride on the ferry to Šolta, a small island off Split. It is popular with Croatians and also with the yachties who take advantage of the excellent mooring facilities in the harbour. We were fortunate to stay with Mirna again and spent a pleasant afternoon with her catching up and being treated to her homemade delicacies. Our rooms are right on the water - no beach, we just walk down and swim off the rocks.... then ride the bikes around the shoreline.
Saturday will see us off to Lastovo, a five hour trip on the ferry . We love it there and are looking forward to catching up with Bruno and Olgica once more...

Leila Not wanting to be morbid but did you see any interesting road kill? Or even better, live wildlife?
Theresa Brook Sorry Leila, nothing this time, not even snakes!
Sivaan It would be great to take some video footage when you're driving! Such an adventure xx
