It was great to welcome Galena and Geoff in Split on Wednesday! When we dropped them off at their apartment, there was a Dalmatian dog to greet them! The Croatians love their dogs , they take them everywhere, in restaurants, shops, cars, boats and ferries! And they are always so well behaved....
We spent a very pleasant couple of days watching the World Cup games on the Riva, shopping, eating....no need to elaborate further, again the photos speak for themselves! We were there to cheer the Socceroos on for their brilliant game with the Netherlands and last night was a nail biter between Ghana and Germany!
The island of Šolta was just as relaxing as when we were there with Uta and our host, Mirna, spoilt us with her home made delicacies again- Octopus salad, local anchovies and marinated tuna on a bed of rocket, she made us feel so special....
With barely a week left, we are making our way back to Zagreb slowly. Galena and Geoff have gone to Plitvice Lakes and we are spending the night in Rijeka. Geoff and I couldn't resist stoping off in Zadar on our way and visiting that amazing fish restaurant again and yes, it was just as superb as last time!
Inland Croatia is simply stunning. Mountains and valleys covered in lush, verdant forests of fir, birch, oak and beech, home to wolves, deer, lynx and bears. It is such a contrast to the stark beauty of the Dalmatian coast. The free ways have a speed limit of 130 kph but that is interpreted quite loosely by the majority of drivers! Tunnels have been drilled straight through mountains, sometimes for 8 kilometres at a time. Each one one has a name... and they are really impressive.
We took a wrong turn coming into Rijeka, ( I was too busy gaping at the scenery instead of Mr Google,), but we managed to find the address of the gorgeous Bruna, where we were staying AND a park! Huge achievements, I can tell you!
Rijeka seems to have grown on the side of a mountain, down to the sea. The never ending narrow streets criss cross their way down these really steep inclines (declines???) over bridges spanning deep ravines.
Bruna is on "Airbnb" and has a room available for tourists visiting Rijeka. We were so lucky to stay there. Right in the heart of the city . We really loved it and again, I will let the photos do the talking, definitely worth a longer visit next time!
Istria is only an hour away from Rijeka, it is famous as a foodie destination, the home of specialty olive oils, wines and truffles! Watch this space.......
