Yesterday, we caught the 4.30 am ferry to Split, hired a car and drove down the coast road to Makarska . We were a bit undecided as to whether to take this route due to scary memories from the 70's but the road has since been upgraded and was great. Geoff is doing a mighty job on the right hand side !
On the way, we stopped at Klis fortress, one of the most significant fortifications in Dalamatia. It was used through the centuries to defend the mountain pass between the mountains Mozor and Kozjak. Just walking along the battlements was amazing, it seems to grow right out of the rocks. I am not a great lover of heights and found myself clinging to the walls.... I can't imagine how people lived there, it is very impressive.
The scenery along the coast road is nothing short of spectacular. The mountains seem to rise up from the sea to majestic proportions, I couldn't stop taking photos...
Makarska is quite a large town and very popular with tourists from all over Europe and I mean popular! We were blown away when we walked down to the beach, and witnessed the hordes...
Still, it's great to see everyone enjoying themselves, in a crowd, packing the beach, the water, the promenade, the shops, the .....
We did find a great restaurant tucked away in one of the streets behind the beach, up yet another obligatory hill. Dinner was fish pâté, octopus salad and a turkey and mushroom dish, all washed down with local wine, beer and grappa.
Even though Makarska is touristy, the mountains dominate the sky and continually draw your eye. They change with the light , especially at sunset, photos just don't do them justice.
This area is not far from where Dad's family come from so we will do some exploring before meeting up with my cousin. In the next day or so...

Gayle You sound as if you both are having the holiday of a life time! It all looks so fantastic,and , sounds so yummy . I am reminded of the time Ginny and I drove down the coast .It was a bit hair raising but very very beautiful. Ps. I'm just a little bit JEL .
