It was wonderful to see the coastline of Ubli again, we disembarked and drove the now familiar 11km road to Lučića. The view of Lastovo village took our breath away as we rounded the last corner. It really is spectacular, especially when bathed in the late afternoon sun. We were so happy to be back . Bruno and Olgica welcomed us with hugs and tears and we spent the evening catching up on events over the last year. Olgica had prepared a mouthwatering Peka which was complimented by Bruno's homemade wine -half wine and half mineral water - "gemischt" Bruno informed me.... (spelling?)
The next morning, we sat on the terrace and drank in the view of the harbour, so familiar and unchanged. We then tackled the climb up the mountain path to the village for our morning coffee where we surprised the gorgeous Lučija at our favourite cafe. It was so good to be back and loving it just as before. Lastovo has to be our favourite place , off the beaten track and as yet undiscovered by tourist hordes , secure in its isolation and simple lifestyle. We were due on the island of Brać by Tuesday which meant we could stay only three nights but we managed to make the most of every minute.
Brać has added a new dimension to our Croatia experience...
What can I say? At a loss for words again. We met Karmen , our host, at Selca, a small village inland .he led us on a merry dance as we followed his scooter several kilometres up a steep, narrow, winding stone track to our "Eco House" . We wanted rustic and we have Rustic! A three hundred year old stone house, perched on top of a hill, restored to basics, solar electricity, surrounded by olive trees, fig trees and LOTS of stone walls. No neighbours, just this magnificent panorama down to the sea where the mountains dominate your every waking minute. Across the water is Makarska and an hour from there, in the mountains, is Dragljane, my grandfathers village.
Here we are, gathering wild rocket, sage and oregano to season our food which we cook on the stone BBQ; having lukewarm showers from the sun and living the dream. There are still a few figs left on the trees, small and bursting with sweetness and we pluck succulent grapes at will as they overhang the stone alcove where we eat. We boil water in a pot on a single gas element for coffee and washing the dishes, no tv, no radio, no stress!
Everyday, sheep wander past, the bells around their necks clanging , It gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling. Otherwise, there is only the sound of grasshoppers and insects. Strangely, there are no birds. We are so accustomed to the birds singing when we wake in Australia it feels odd without them. We did see a huge eagle soaring towards the mountains which was awesome, especially as he hung seemingly motionless in the brilliant blue sky , scouring the rocks for prey.
The sea is perfect. Clear, warm turquoise water I'm sure you can guess how we spend our days....
